The highest rated creatures were published in the book. White Dwarf was a British gaming magazine that covered fantasy gaming as well as other similar genres.

There were a lot of goofy monsters in the Fiend Folio. Many of the creatures were cross breeds of other creatures from earlier books.

And a few were historical or mythological additions. There were also some really interesting monsters in the Fiend Folio,.

One of my favorites is the Death Knight. The 1st Edition Death Knight may be one of those creatures that Gary and company felt had too short of a description.

There were three paragraphs describing it. One of those paragraphs was one sentence long. But the image of the Death Knight printed in the Fiend Folio spoke volumes about it.

It looked much like my favorite monster….. The Death Knight is like a Lich version of a fighter. It is a very powerful warrior but also has some terrible magical powers as well.

There were only twelve of these creatures. In some sense, I suppose, one might think this was a rip off of the Nazgul in Lord of the Rings.

It probably is. But these are not exactly Nazgul. They are not ring wraiths. They are not former kings. These are former human paladins note in 1st Edition a paladin could only be human.

In a sense these were the original Anti-Paladin. Death Knights were created by a demon prince. Demogorgon is the primary suspect.

Presumably he did so before making his theatrical debut on Stranger Things. Unlike other forms of undead these cannot be turned or controlled by a cleric using their holy symbol.

I find this rather interesting. Because a Lich can be turned. They, themselves, can control undead as if they were a 6th level evil cleric. While they cannot be turned, they can be affected, by a holy word.

But if it rolls 11 or lower on the percentage roll then the spell is reflected towards the caster. They are powerful warriors. They have strength of 18 In 1st Edition this strength is nearly superhuman.

It is the same strength as an Ogre. They almost always fight with a sword. And eighty percent of the time this sword will be magical. They are often encountered mounted on a Nightmare.

But some of the most powerful, and dangerous, powers of the Death Knight are magical. It always generates a fear radius. It also has the following spell like abilities:.

These creatures vary from average intelligence to absolute genius. They are extremely evil and chaotic. So as you can see, despite the brevity of the description in the Fiend Folio, there was actually a great deal of detail about them densely packed into those three paragraphs.

The Death Knight is still a very powerful adversary. It is a CR 17 foe with a great deal of magical power and physical fighting skill.

Knight tale. I love that they went to the library to learn more about their quest. Our girls really enjoyed this book; we like all of Tomie dePaola 's stories.

This is a charming picture book for very young children with great illustrations and a story that is both sweet and funny. While this is very much a book for very young kids, it's got appeal for a wider audience, too.

An adult reader can get through the whole text in, oh, I doubt it would take a whole minute, but then you'd be missing out on the clever details in the adorable artwork.

You can never go wrong with a book by Tomie dePaola. Nov 22, Mathew rated it really liked it. It tells the story with very few words and plenty of wordless pages, of a Knight and a Dragon, bound by their cultural bonds, preparing for the story-bound face-off.

The pages and panels themselves are perfectly balanced with our brave night on the verso and dragon on the recto at times. The tension builds as the knight creates his armour and the dragon practices looking ferocious in the mirror.

It all seems to be going well until the battle commences. A little delight and sure to make the most reluctant reader smile.

The hardback itself is small A5 in size and perfect for little hands. Feb 26, Madeline Wright rated it it was amazing. The Knight and the Dragon is a tale about two characters, a knight and a dragon, who are determined to carry out the historical stereotypes of fighting each other.

They each set out to prepare for the fight by researching book. The two finally meet for the fight, which goes catastrophically bad, the princess offers them each a book related to barbecue.

In the end, the knight and dragon work together as friends to open a barbecue business; the dragon cooking with his fire, and the Knight serving The Knight and the Dragon is a tale about two characters, a knight and a dragon, who are determined to carry out the historical stereotypes of fighting each other.

In the end, the knight and dragon work together as friends to open a barbecue business; the dragon cooking with his fire, and the Knight serving people.

A major theme in this book is friendship and learning how to overcome perceived stereotypes. Personally, this book made me so happy because two characters who are supposed to hate each other end up being great friends and see that working together is better than fighting.

It was very eye-opening to see how such an intriguing picture book can convey such a big message of going against stereotypes.

Not to mention, the illustrations in this book are phenomenal. I recommend this book because it teaches that friends are made based off of who the person actually is and not the stereotypes that have been associated with them.

This can be used in classroom settings to show that anyone can be friends, even when it seems impossible. Apr 09, Cassidy Crandall rated it it was ok Shelves: children-s-lit.

In the end, the prince and dragon both use their talents to open up a hamburger shop. This sense of team work, and friendship as prominent as the theme of the story.

A critique I have of this story was it was too short and lacked transitional pages that could have extended the story or made it more intense.

Working together in the end was the best to do and would be important for children to read about and notice. It was funny and a good book to have in the classroom for independent reading or at home for students who enjoy a good laugh and fairytales that let you interpret what will happen next in the plot.

His illustrations have a uniqueness about them where they show the story with a couple of extra details, but not so many details that the page is overwhelming and difficult for preschoolers to understand.

His books use great vocabulary and story structure to them, with and without words. This book is an almost wordless picture book.

It is about a knight and a dragon. Each character has never fought the other before and decide that it's time to do so. However, before they fight, they must learn how to fight.

Each finds a book and reads about how to do their respective parts. The knight reads about making armor and gets all of his gear ready.

The dragon reads about swishing his tail and practicing looking fierce. Then they practice on dummies. When they are ready to fight, the line up, charge, and miss!

In the end, they don't fight at all, but read new books about making and cooking a bar-b-q. My students love this book!

They love that it has a dragon and a fight! I love that it introduces them to vocabulary like knight, shield, armor, helmet, lance, sword, castle, cave, and more!

So Follow or Friend me here on GoodReads! Dec 18, Denis A. Half of the book has narrative and the other half is word-less.

I might hold off introducing this one to little ones due to some of the more violent parts. That being said my three year old loves anything to do with dragons, dinosaurs, trucks, power tools, TMNT.

But what draws him to the story is the cover that shows the dragon and knight. The part I found a little squeamish was the illustrated page of the knight honing all of his weapons in preparation to fight the dragon.

Not anything horrible Half of the book has narrative and the other half is word-less. Not anything horrible and the page is word less so adult readers can use their storytelling skills to avert attention from the weapons, make the best of it, or skip the page all together, but it was a bit unexpected.

The story finishes strong but way too abrupt. Five stars for the story, minus one for the violence, add another for being a wordless-- five star story.

Despite the failure at destroying each other, the two ultimately become business partners. The example is suff I am so sick of this book!

The example is sufficiently classic to fill a whole chapter of the well-known marketing book, How to Drive Your Competition Crazy. Make sure to look at some other DePaola titles, too -- my kids love them all.
